A-one+ Clocks up Remarkable Milestone without Reportable Accident

A-one+ has passed a doubly significant landmark, reaching an impressive one thousand days and four million working hours without a reportable accident. The integrated highways service provider has a long standing commitment to health, safety and welfare, underpinned by the company value of ealways putting safety firstf. The shared joint venture between CH2M, Colas and Costain covers three areas of the strategic road network on behalf of Highways England, North East, East Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.

The Yorkshire and Humber team has achieved this significant result by retaining a zero accident frequency rate (AFR) of one thousand days in mid-January and then topping that by reaching four million working hours less than two weeks later.

Employee survey results helped shape an innovative health & safety strategy and new ways of working have been introduced, including the implementation of an improved strategy and action plan, this was produced in booklet format and distributed internally as well as throughout the supply chain and shared with parent companies.. The Managing Director issues a commitment card to all employees giving authorisation to say estopf if it isnft safe to continue working and a safety action-plan wheel has been developed offering an instant visual snapshot to monitor progress and re-align focus on a particular area. This has led to a number of specific campaigns such as manual handling which has helped retain the zero AFR.

All employees attend cultural behavioural safety training to cultivate understanding and personal responsibility and staff briefing processes have been redesigned to capture near miss intelligence and used as an opportunity for prevention. In addition there is a health and wellbeing programme with company health advocates that provides; diabetes checks, skin cancer beads, mental wellbeing, DIY health check and flu jabs. A robust drugs and alcohol testing system is now in use and a rigid framework is used to assess the qualifications, behaviours and general competencies of front line supervisors; who are identified by a blue hard hat as the person ein chargef on site. .

A-one+ extends their safety expertise to collaborate with local authorities providing network inductions to contractors and their employees for work sites. There has also been a number of radio commercials aimed at frequent long-drivers to consider operatives working within traffic managed areas on busy high-speed roads. Furthermore the award winning Impact Protection Vehicle (IPV) No Strikes driver education programme is an industry leading initiative developed specifically to improve road worker safety. This training has reached over 30,000 freight drivers so far, gathering feedback and has been presented to the transport authorities in Paris.

Brian Statham, A-one+ Area 12 General Manager, said; "It is imperative for our company and the work we do to have strong health &  safety practices in place and while it is fantastic to reach this landmark the main reward is the safety of our road workers and ensuring we provide the safest working environment possible."

Roger Wantling, Service Delivery Team Leader, Highways England, said; "I am so proud of this achievement. The greatest pleasure from such an announcement is that it means all our front line troops, who work so hard to keep our network safe and sustainable, are going home safe and sound every day. Congratulations to all involved, it is a privilege to work with such safety focussed people every week.

This latest achievement follows recognition from the Considerate Constructors Scheme being awarded eMost Considerate Company 2015f as well as winner of a Health & Safety award as part of the Highways England Supplier Recognition Scheme.

Peter McDermott, Director of Highways and Bridges (Europe) at CH2M, said; "Congratulations to the team for this fantastic achievement. All of those involved should be very proud of this milestone."

Dennis Gregg, Associate Director, Colas Ltd, said; "An absolutely fantastic achievement and one Area 12 should be extremely proud of, well done to all of the team."

Simon Ellison, Costain Highways Director, said "This is a tremendous achievement - a culture has been established that everyone can be proud of".
