ORALITE® 5921M

ORALITE® 5921M:
First reflective film to be granted approval to the new ECE 104 Class F

As the first manufacturer of reflective materials, ORAFOL recently obtained approval to ECE 104 Class F (thereby fulfilling also the reflective requirements in ECE 70 Class 5) for the ORALITE® 5921M Prismatic Fleet Marking Grade. Both these European standards have recently undergone major revisions, to form the foundation of a full European harmonisation of this type of regulations. Previously quite a few national regulations have been in place, and for products already approved to these standards, these approvals will of course still be ok. However, new approvals being issued will be issued towards the new updated European requirements. And ORALITE® 5921M has come in first!

In brief – the changes to the regulations and what it means:

Changes to ECE 104:

Regulation ECE 104 outlines the requirements for retroreflective materials that are applied directly onto a vehicle. In the past, this regulation defined 3 classes (C, D and E) of reflective markings relevant for vehicles within the M, N and O categories. Recently, however, a new amendment has been added to Regulation ECE 104. This introduces a new class F. The background for this is to start a progressive harmonizing of all national vehicle equipment standards that have existed in Europe until now. Existing national approvals to e.g. DIN 11030, DIN 30710 or "TPESC" will not become invalid, but in the future it will only be approvals to the new ECE 104 which will be possible to obtain. It is therefore assumed that these national regulations will no longer be updated.

Changes to ECE 70:

Regulation ECE 70 is the regulation outlining the requirements for rear marker plates. These plates are constructed for mounting as a complete attachment to the vehicle. In the past, UN Regulation 70 defined 4 classes for rigid warning signs for identification of long trucks, tractors and buses, as well as trailers and semitrailers (vehicle categories M, N and O). With the new updated regulation published in June 2015 a new section was added, namely a Class 5 for plates which may also be used on vehicles of other categories. Same as for Regulation ECE 104, this new revision of Regulation 70 is the start of harmonizing all current national regulation of this type (e.g. DIN 11030, DIN 30710 and technical specifications No. 18b). Current approvals to these national standards will not become invalid, but in the future it will only be approvals to the new ECE 70 which will be possible to obtain. It is therefore assumed that these national regulations will no longer be updated.
